AI implementation expected to lead to reimbursement changes. #HealthcareRevolution

The U.S. FDA has approved nearly 900 AI and machine learning-enabled medical devices, mostly for radiology, but adoption in radiology departments is still limited due to lack of reimbursement and decreasing payments. Medicare reimbursement to radiologists has decreased by 32% since 2005, with CMS only assigning payment for around 10 approved AI/ML devices. Stakeholders are encouraged to advocate for reimbursement, with experts suggesting that AI can improve practices even without immediate ROI. Implementing AI algorithms can improve workflow and efficiency, leading to future gains. Conversations about payment for AI-based tools are increasing at the federal level, with experts comparing the adoption of AI algorithms to the adoption of PACS in radiology. Eventually, AI is expected to become as essential as PACS in the diagnostic process. Despite the challenges, there is optimism that AI will become more widely adopted in the future.
