AI tool assists farmers in finding grants for agriculture. #farminggrants

Two Northeastern University students created an AI-powered navigation tool to consolidate information on grants offered by Massachusetts’ Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. The tool aims to make it easier for constituents, including farmers, businesses, municipalities, and nonprofits, to find and access available grants. The students, part of the AI for Impact Co-op Program, worked with the EEA to address the decentralized nature of grant information and provide a user-friendly database for grant opportunities.

The students learned about AI’s capabilities and its potential to streamline processes and enhance job functions. They emphasized the importance of AI in assisting rather than replacing human efforts. The tool they developed helps constituents determine their eligibility for grants, understand requirements, and avoid wasting time on ineligible applications. The students also highlighted the fast-moving nature of AI development and the real-world challenges they encountered.

Despite warnings about bureaucracy, the students found that government agencies like the EEA were nimble and adaptable, showcasing how technology can be embraced quickly in public sector settings. The students had a tight deadline to test their tool before planting season, underscoring the urgency and efficiency required in such projects. Overall, the experience provided valuable insights into the practical applications of AI and its role in improving access to essential resources like grants.
