Conservative groups are also using AI tools for voter registration challenges, sparking fears of potential voter suppression. States are introducing bills to address AI and election disinformation, with some enacting laws and others in progress. A report by the NewDEAL Forum urges states to label AI-generated campaign material, conduct role-playing exercises, create rapid-response systems, and educate the public to combat the AI threat.

However, some measures have loopholes or weaknesses, such as limited disclaimers, lack of criminal penalties, and restrictions on certain types of AI-generated content. Experts attribute these shortcomings to the novelty of the AI threat, as states are still navigating the best approach. The evolving nature of AI-generated content poses a challenge for lawmakers to keep up with the technology. Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to address the AI threat to elections and protect voters from deception.
