#Baidu CEO Robin Li emphasizes importance of large language models

Robin Li, chairman of Baidu, believes that Chinese developers of large language models should focus on applications rather than technology to bring the technology to life. He emphasized the importance of ‘super capable’ applications over ‘super applications’ that only focus on daily active users.

At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Li discussed how benchmark models are becoming more integrated into workflows, citing examples of how LLMs have improved efficiency in tasks like dealing with express delivery orders. Baidu released its own LLM Ernie Bot in March 2023, which has seen a significant increase in daily users, reflecting real demand.

Li also discussed the differences between open-source and closed-source models, noting that closed-source models are more powerful due to requiring fewer parameters to catch up. However, he acknowledged the value of open-source models in specific scenarios like academic research and teaching.

Looking ahead, Li expressed optimism about the development of AI agents in various fields such as healthcare, finance, education, manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture. He believes that over one million AI agents will form an ecosystem of autonomous helpers in the future.
