Penn State’s Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence (CSRAI) held its first-ever “Fake-a-thon” competition, where participants used generative AI tools to create fake news stories. The winners of Stage 1 included Kyle Smith, Mahjabin Nahar, and Ethan Capitano, who created believable fake news stories on various topics. The competition aimed to highlight the dangers of fake news and the importance of fact-checking information before sharing it.
In Stage 2, participants scrutinized entries from Stage 1 to determine if they were real or fake. The winners of Stage 2 were Hanlin Yang, Emma Carpenetti, Dibya Mishra, and Zishan Wei, who correctly identified the highest number of fake stories. The organizing committee included doctoral students and assistant professors from the College of Information Sciences and Technology.
The CSRAI, launched in 2020, promotes transformative AI research while considering social and ethical implications. The center supports a wide range of activities from foundational research to the application of AI in various fields. The Fake-a-thon competition aimed to raise awareness about the insidious nature of fake news and the importance of critical thinking in the digital age.
