Fighting misuse of AI in student writing #AIethics

At ISTELive 24, AI is all around--but so are vetted educator resources to teach students how to use AI as a student writing tool.

As AI becomes more prevalent in classrooms, the key question is how students can use it appropriately. Teachers need to teach students when and how to use AI in writing assignments, rather than banning it outright. Building students’ confidence in their writing skills can reduce their reliance on AI. Strategies shared by instructional technology trainers include improving writing skills, using AI tools appropriately, and identifying signs of AI-generated work. It is important to address reasons why students turn to AI, such as lack of skills or motivation. Teachers should rethink traditional assessments and offer alternative ways for students to demonstrate their understanding. AI can be used to personalize content, provide one-on-one learning experiences, and offer quick responses to questions. Creating assignments that challenge AI’s limitations can discourage students from relying on it entirely. Educators should communicate with families about AI use, define acceptable boundaries, and emphasize ethical use. It is crucial to train students on ethical AI use and help them gain confidence in their writing. Ultimately, AI should be viewed as a tool to assist, not replace, human learning and teaching practices.
