Getty Images has filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Stability AI Inc, alleging that Stability used over 12 million Getty photos without a license to train its AI image-generation system. This lawsuit, filed in Delaware federal court, adds to previous legal actions against Stability in the UK and a class-action complaint in California. Stability, based in London, released AI systems for image generation and has raised over $100 million in funding. Getty accused Stability of copyright infringement and unfair competition, stating that its high-quality images are valuable for AI training. Getty also claimed that Stability used its trademarks without permission, causing consumer confusion. Getty is seeking a court order to stop Stability from using its images and monetary damages for the alleged infringement. The case is ongoing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware. Getty is represented by Weil Gotshal & Manges, while Stability’s legal representation is not available. This lawsuit is part of a larger trend of legal actions against AI content creators for misusing copyrighted work.
