Google Translate expands to support Cantonese in major language update. #AI

Google has expanded its Google Translate service to include Cantonese, one of 110 new languages supported by generative artificial intelligence technology. Users can now translate between 243 languages, including Cantonese, a Chinese dialect widely spoken in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong, and Chinese migrant communities. Google Translate can process both text and voice translations.

Cantonese has been a highly requested language for Google Translate, but its similarities with Mandarin made it challenging to train models. With the help of Google’s PaLM 2 large language model, the translation efficiency has improved. The advancement of LLM technology has led to the development of new AI tools like Google’s Gemma 2 LLM, which was recently introduced to researchers and developers.

While other services like Microsoft’s Bing and OpenAI’s LLMs also support Cantonese translation, Google remains the most popular choice among internet users in Hong Kong. The addition of other languages like Punjabi and Hindi-related languages further enhances the capabilities of Google Translate. The rapid evolution of AI technology is driving competition among tech companies to improve translation services and introduce new features to meet user demands.
