Google Translate expands with 110 new languages using AI. #Translation

Google Translate has expanded its platform with the addition of 110 new languages, thanks to the use of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models. This expansion is the largest ever undergone by Google Translate, made possible through the use of the PaLM 2 large language model (LLM). The new languages added represent over 614 million speakers, opening up translations for around 8% of the world’s population. Some of the new languages come from Africa, representing the largest expansion of African languages to date.

Notable additions to Google Translate include Cantonese, Shahmukhi, and Afar. The addition of Manx, a Celtic language, and Tok Pisin, the lingua franca of Papua New Guinea, were also highlighted. Google plans to add more languages over time as part of its 1,000 Languages Initiative, which aims to support the world’s 1,000 most-spoken languages using AI models. As AI technology like PaLM 2 continues to advance, the process of adding new languages will become faster.

Google Translate’s expansion showcases the power of AI in breaking down language barriers and making communication more accessible globally. Through partnerships with expert linguists and native speakers, Google aims to support even more language varieties and spelling conventions in the future.
