Innovative AI tool developed for advanced cancer treatment #AItherapy

A team from the Australian National University (ANU) has developed an AI model called DeepPT that can predict responses to cancer therapies. When combined with another tool called ENLIGHT, the patient response rate to cancer therapy increased from 33.3% to 46.5%. The AI model uses histopathology images of patient tissue to select the most suitable therapy, which is more cost-effective and timely compared to current methods that process complex molecular data. The lead author of the study, Danh-Tai Hoang, emphasized the importance of selecting the right treatment for cancer patients to improve outcomes. The AI model was trained on over 5,500 patients with 16 common types of cancer, including breast, lung, head and neck, cervical, and pancreatic cancers. This research builds on previous work by the same researchers to develop AI tools for classifying brain tumors. Collaboration with scientists from the US National Cancer Institute and pharmaceutical company Pangea Biomed helped in the development of the AI model. Hoang highlighted the challenge of delays in treatment for patients with high-grade tumors and the need for timely decision-making in selecting therapies. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential of AI in improving cancer treatment outcomes and the importance of using histopathology images for predicting patient responses to therapies.
