Meta is expanding its generative AI ad tools to allow advertisers to upload reference images for AI-generated variations and create text overlays based on previous campaigns. These tools will be available through Meta’s Advantage+ Creative portal and aim to improve ad performance by creating faster variations. The AI tools will be free for advertisers, but political advertisers are still banned from using generative AI for political ads. Meta is also removing the “Imagined With AI” watermark from AI images.
Some marketers see the potential for small businesses to create more content with these AI ad upgrades, while others are concerned about the potential for a sea of sameness in ad creative on social platforms. Advertiser interest in AI ads is mixed, with concerns about transparency and overspending. Meta’s updates come amid ongoing criticism of its Advantage+ Creative portal and concerns about the platform’s dominance in the market.
Other platforms like Google, Snap, and Nextdoor are also adding new generative AI tools for businesses. Google has added AI image creation for demand-gen campaigns, Snap is using AI to speed up augmented reality lens creation, and Nextdoor is offering tools for text-based messages. Nextdoor CEO Nirav Tolia stated that the platform will focus on improving its current ad unit’s performance before considering adding tools for AI-generated images and video for advertisers. Tolia emphasized the importance of pragmatism in implementing AI tools across the platform to bring value to advertisers.
