Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb also emphasized the need to restructure pension payments, suggesting an increase in the retirement age to 65 years. The law minister mentioned that pension reforms would be implemented across all sectors to alleviate the burden on the government. The PTI has opposed any constitutional amendments related to judges’ tenure, labeling them as person-specific. Previous attempts to modify the retirement age of judges have been made, with a private bill introduced in 2019 to raise the retirement age to 68 years. Any changes to the tenure of Supreme Court judges would require a constitutional amendment, necessitating a two-thirds majority in both the Senate and National Assembly. The ruling coalition currently holds a majority in both houses.
