Microsoft and OpenAI are facing a lawsuit from eight newspaper publishers in the US, alleging copyright infringement for using their articles without permission to develop AI models. The lawsuit claims that OpenAI and Microsoft used journalism created by the publishers for products like ChatGPT and Copilot, adding value to Microsoft’s market. The publishers, owned by hedge fund Alden Global Capital, argue that their work was stolen without compensation. This is not the first time Microsoft and OpenAI have faced such lawsuits, with previous cases involving The New York Times and online news outlets. OpenAI does have agreements with some publishers, including the Associated Press and Axel Springer, to use their content for AI models. Despite the lawsuit, OpenAI maintains that they are actively engaged in partnerships with news organizations to explore opportunities and provide solutions. Microsoft declined to comment on the lawsuit, and OpenAI spokesperson emphasized the potential for AI tools like ChatGPT to enhance the news experience.
