Nigeria introduces AI model trained in indigenous languages. #MultilingualAI

Nigeria has launched its first multilingual Large Language Model (LLM) in collaboration with local and global tech entities. The initiative, announced by Minister Bosun Tijani, aims to capitalize on the growing AI market in Africa, with predictions suggesting significant growth in the coming years. The LLM will be trained in five low-resource languages and accented English to promote inclusivity and ensure AI benefits reach diverse linguistic groups in Nigeria.

The launch of the multilingual LLM coincides with Nigeria’s development of its National AI Strategy, with input from over 120 AI experts. The country has secured $3.5 million in seed funding from partners like UNDP, UNESCO, Meta, Google, and Microsoft to advance the strategy. Additionally, $2 million has been invested by 21st Century Technologies in the pilot program.

The initiative also involves collaboration with international partners, particularly the United States, to ensure the secure and trustworthy deployment of AI technologies. The project is supported by over 7,000 fellows from the 3MTT Nigeria program, highlighting the commitment to building a robust AI ecosystem in the country. Nigeria’s investment in AI technology comes at a crucial time, with the potential for significant growth and impact in the coming years.
