Microsoft has developed an AI chatbot based on their GPT-4 generative AI model specifically for US intelligence agencies like the FBI and CIA. The chatbot is designed to analyze top-secret information in a secure environment disconnected from the internet. However, concerns about hallucinations in large language models persist. While the bot has not been named yet, more intelligence agencies are showing interest in using generative AI technology to process classified data.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which usually runs on the cloud, poses a higher risk of data leaks and hacking. The CIA had previously announced plans to create a similar chatbot service. Microsoft’s chief technology officer for strategic missions and technology, William Chappell, stated that the new bot will be available for testing by around 10,000 people in the intelligence community starting Thursday.
There is a race among countries to implement generative AI for intelligence purposes, with the CIA expressing a desire to be the first to do so. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s chief Sam Altman has been pitching the company’s AI services and tools to enterprises. The development of AI chatbots for intelligence agencies highlights the growing interest and investment in AI technology for sensitive and classified information processing.
