Phil Schiller joins OpenAI board, iPhone equals Microsoft. #AI

Apple Inc. is set to secure an observer role on the board of OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, matching the position held by Microsoft Corporation. Phil Schiller, Apple’s former marketing chief, has been chosen for this role, allowing him insights into OpenAI’s decision-making process. Despite not leading Apple’s AI initiatives, Schiller’s experience as a company steward makes him a suitable choice for the observer role. The announcement follows Apple’s decision in June to integrate ChatGPT into its artificial intelligence features on its devices.

This move puts Apple on par with Microsoft, OpenAI’s primary AI technology provider. However, having both Microsoft and Apple present at board meetings could lead to complications due to their history as both rivals and partners. Some discussions at OpenAI board meetings may involve future AI initiatives between OpenAI and Microsoft, from which Microsoft may prefer Schiller to be excluded.

The partnership between Apple and OpenAI has been of interest, with Microsoft expressing concerns about the potential impact on its product ambitions. The partnership does not involve cash payments, as Apple believes that exposure to OpenAI’s brand and technology to its user base is of equal or greater value. The observer role for Apple is expected to take effect later this year, allowing them to participate in board meetings without voting rights or directorial powers.
