AI usage in the workplace is at an all-time high, with concerns about job replacement still prevalent, according to a Microsoft and LinkedIn research report. The Annual Work Trend Index surveyed 31,000 people across 31 countries and found that 75% of workers are using AI, but over half are hesitant to admit using it for important tasks due to fears of being replaceable. Nearly half of professionals are worried about AI replacing their jobs and are considering quitting.
Despite these concerns, workers are recognizing the benefits of AI tools in advancing their careers. Bosses are increasingly looking to hire workers with AI skills, with hiring for technical AI talent increasing by 323% in the last eight years. Non-technical workers who can use AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot are also in high demand. However, companies are not actively developing their employees’ AI skills, with only 39% of AI users receiving training from their employers.
Workers are aware that AI skills are essential for remaining competitive in the job market and advancing their careers. Over three-quarters of professionals believe AI skills are necessary for accessing more job opportunities and getting promoted faster. Embracing AI and learning new skills is crucial for staying marketable in the evolving job landscape.
Overall, the research highlights the importance of employees overcoming their fears of AI, embracing new skills, and companies investing in AI training to stay competitive in the rapidly changing work environment.
