The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies to enhance security measures at airports. TSA’s Chief Technology, Data, and AI Officer, Matt Gilkeson, highlighted the agency’s testing and integration of AI tools to improve security effectiveness. Following President Biden’s executive order on responsible AI use, TSA is developing plans for broader AI deployment.
One area of focus for TSA is enhancing luggage x-ray screenings using AI to detect prohibited items more accurately. TSA Administrator David Pekoske mentioned the agency’s exploration of AI to assist officers in identifying barred objects. TSA is also implementing facial biometrics at airports to verify travelers’ identities, with plans to expand this technology to more airports.
TSA has already rolled out advanced technologies, such as machine learning algorithms, to improve security detection and streamline the screening process. These technologies have reduced pat-down searches and enhanced the passenger experience. Despite concerns about privacy and surveillance, TSA is taking steps to safeguard traveler data and offer opt-out options for facial scanning.
DHS has released an AI roadmap to guide the use of emerging capabilities, enabling TSA to test AI algorithms and technologies in formal sandbox environments. The agency is also exploring the use of generative AI tools for efficiency and early use cases. Overall, TSA is committed to leveraging AI to enhance security while ensuring privacy and compliance with regulations.
