Microsoft and Google did not respond to requests for comment on Mollick’s views. Despite the companies’ claims that their AI models will transform the workspace, Mollick believes they have more negative consequences. While Microsoft promotes Copilot as a way to enhance communication and productivity, Mollick sees it as a dangerous tool. Similarly, Google’s Gemini could enable surveillance of white-collar workers, resembling Amazon’s monitoring practices. Both companies have integrated AI into their existing tools, leading to significant profits in their recent earnings filings. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella praised the impact of AI on business outcomes, contrasting Mollick’s skepticism. Mollick, however, remains optimistic about AI’s potential but stresses the importance of acknowledging both the benefits and drawbacks of this technology. Despite his critical views, Mollick sees AI as a tool that requires careful consideration and ethical implementation.
