Character.AI enables users to converse with AI avatars via calls. #AIavatars

Character.AI, a startup backed by a16z, has announced a new feature that allows users to talk to AI characters over calls in multiple languages. The company tested the calling feature with over 3 million users making 20 million calls before its public launch. Users can initiate calls with AI characters with a tap of a button, and the feature is designed to provide a smooth calling experience with reduced latency.

In addition to the calling feature, Character.AI also launched Character Voices earlier this year, allowing users to hear characters speak in one-on-one chats with over 1 million voices available in the app’s library. The new calling feature comes at a time when some users on Reddit have complained about their characters’ changing personalities, with the startup clarifying that no major changes were made, but some users may have been part of a test group.

Meanwhile, Google is reportedly working on its own customized chatbot platform to compete with Meta and Character.AI, as reported by The Information. This development indicates a growing interest in AI chatbot technology and its potential applications in various industries.
