To improve their courses educators should respond to how students actually use AI

The GENIAL project examined how students use generative AI tools in real-time, with a focus on qualitative and quantitative subjects. Recommendations for educators include integrating AI findings into teaching plans. Jon Cardoso-Silva chaired a panel on AI in education. The study found that students mostly used AI tools for task completion and productivity, often to save time. However, students sometimes relied too heavily on AI, leading to lower quality work and a lack of deep understanding. Educators should ensure students use AI to enhance learning, not bypass it. Recommendations include incorporating non-marked activities, teaching critical thinking about AI outputs, and designing assessments that reflect the learning process. Educators should guide students to move beyond AI-favored solutions and teach them to be critical of AI-generated content. The study also found that students in management courses found AI tools slightly less useful than those in quantitative and data science courses. Overall, the study highlights the need for educators to carefully consider the integration of AI tools into their curriculum and assessments to ensure they enhance student learning rather than hinder it.
