Figma recently released a new tool called Make Designs that uses generative AI to quickly mock up apps. However, the tool was pulled after drafting designs that closely resembled Apple’s iOS weather app. Figma CEO Dylan Field took responsibility for pushing the team to meet a deadline and defended the company’s AI development approach.
Andy Allen, CEO of Not Boring Software, highlighted the similarities between Figma’s tool and Apple’s weather app, warning designers to be cautious to avoid legal issues. Figma’s CTO, Kris Rasmussen, stated that the AI models used by Make Designs were off-the-shelf and not trained on Apple’s designs.
Despite claims that Figma did not train its AI tools, the resemblance to Apple’s app raises questions about the training of OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Amazon’s Titan Image Generator G1 models. Figma introduced AI training policies, allowing users to opt in or out of content usage for training until August 15th.
Rasmussen mentioned plans to train Figma’s own models in the future but emphasized the need to ensure they only learn general design patterns and specific Figma concepts. The company is reviewing its design system to address the issue and plans to re-enable Make Designs after implementing quality checks.
Figma’s AI features are in beta, and the company aims to address potential issues before re-enabling Make Designs. The incident reflects the challenges companies face when integrating AI into creative tools, similar to Adobe and Meta’s experiences with AI-related controversies.
