The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has launched a multilingual large language model (LLM) to enhance AI development in the country. The model, trained in five low-resource languages and high-end English, aims to represent low-resourced languages in AI datasets. The initiative was a collaborative effort between Nigerian AI firm Awarritech, international tech firm DataDotOrg, NITDA, and NCAIR, with funding from international and local partners totaling US$3.5 million.
The introduction of the AI model coincided with the presentation of Nigeria’s National AI Strategy, developed through consultations with over 120 AI experts. The country is ready to leverage AI to promote economic development and good leadership. The United States has shown interest in partnering with Nigeria to advance digital economy and AI developments, fostering economic growth and safe deployment of AI technologies.
NCAIR, a central institution in the initiative, has been renovated to enhance AI research and development, with improved computational power and infrastructure. The center now supports various activities, such as AI research in government and enterprise, remote connections of AI hubs within Nigeria, and projects of national importance. This initiative not only strengthens local AI capabilities but also provides a foundation for further advancement and utilization of AI in critical sectors of the economy.
