Nanyun “Violet” Peng, an assistant professor of computer science at UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, has been awarded a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation for her research in artificial intelligence. The grant is worth $586,000 over five years and will support her work on developing a new type of generative language model called insertion-based language models. These models aim to improve flexibility, controllability, and efficiency in modern language models, leading to better creative content generation and personalized user experiences with AI.
Peng leads the PLUS Lab at UCLA, which focuses on language modeling and reasoning. The lab has made significant advancements in language generation, including predicting epidemic events through social media analysis and creating an AI algorithm that generates sonnets. Peng has also been recognized with awards such as the Okawa Foundation Research Award and the Google Research Scholar Award. Prior to UCLA, she was a research assistant professor at USC and earned her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University.
In addition to her academic work, Peng is an Amazon Visiting Academic and is involved in analyzing persona biases in chatbots for an upcoming study. Her research and contributions to the field of artificial intelligence have been widely recognized and supported by prestigious grants and awards.
