Apple announced “Apple Intelligence” at WWDC 2024, a new suite of AI features for the iPhone, Mac, and more. These features include a more conversational Siri, custom AI-generated “Genmoji,” and access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT for more complex queries. These AI features will be available on select devices and in English only. Siri will have enhanced capabilities to carry out actions between apps, manage notifications, summarize text, and more. Users can also type to Siri, not just talk. Apple emphasizes privacy with on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute for more complex requests.
Genmoji will generate emoji-like reactions on the fly, while Image Playground allows for image generation in various apps. AI is also being integrated into the Photos app for improved search functionality and editing features. ChatGPT, powered by GPT-4o, will be available as a chatbot for Siri to use when needed, with user permission required before sending queries. OpenAI ensures user privacy by not storing user requests and obscuring IP addresses. Paid features within ChatGPT can be accessed by subscribers.
Overall, Apple is catching up with competitors in terms of AI features, with a focus on user privacy and enhanced functionality across its devices. These new features will be rolled out in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia starting this fall.
