Privacy firm Proton has acquired encrypted note-taking service Standard Notes, expanding its lineup of privacy tools. Proton, known for its secure email service and VPN, aims to enter the world of productivity apps with this acquisition. Proton CEO Andy Yen highlighted the end-to-end encryption of Standard Notes as complementary to Proton’s services, emphasizing shared values between the two companies.
Standard Notes, founded in 2017 and used by over 300,000 people, is open source, offers a free version, and has grown independently without venture capital. The integration of Standard Notes into Proton’s ecosystem will enable faster development of new features and services. While Standard Notes will remain independent, users will eventually have access to Proton software and vice versa.
Proton assures that Standard Notes will remain open source, with pricing for the free and premium versions unchanged. Current subscribers with a five-year plan can continue as usual. Standard Notes CEO Mo Bitar expressed excitement about joining forces with Proton, highlighting their shared ethos and mission-driven approach.
The collaboration between Proton and Standard Notes aims to empower users to take control of their data and think freely. Both companies are committed to providing secure and privacy-focused tools for their communities.
