Google initially announced Gemini Nano as an AI model designed for the Pixel 8 Pro, citing hardware limitations for not including it in the base Pixel 8 model. However, Google has now confirmed that Gemini Nano will be available to Pixel 8 users in the next Pixel Feature Drop in June, but only in developer preview mode for those with Android developer accounts. This requires signing up and paying a one-time $25 registration fee. Gemini Nano will power two new features on the Pixel 8, including a Summarize feature in the Recorder app for generating bullet points based on audio recordings, and Gboard Smart Reply for higher quality smart replies with conversational awareness. Google had initially blamed the Pixel 8’s lower RAM compared to the Pixel 8 Pro for not including Gemini Nano, but both phones are powered by the same Tensor G3 chipset. Samsung was able to include Gemini Nano in the Galaxy S24 series, which has a similar RAM configuration to the Pixel 8. While Pixel 8 users initially felt left out, Google is working to bring Gemini Nano to a wider audience in the future.
