Google announced Gemini, a new tier that runs entirely on-device, with one version called Nano. Initially, Google planned to only make Gemini Nano available for the Pixel 8 Pro, but due to online backlash, they have decided to bring it to the Pixel 8 as well. Gemini Nano will arrive as a developer preview with the next Pixel Feature Drop in June.
Google has noticed excitement from Pixel 8 owners for Gemini Nano. The company explains that running large language models on phones with varying memory specifications can result in different user experiences, so they rigorously tested things on the Pixel 8. Gemini Nano will power two new features, Summarize in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard, which will work offline on both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
